However precious an asset is indeed, it becomes worthless if not of use when in dire need, like water if were to remain in the clouds high up in the sky instead of coming down to the earth as pouring rain. Thus, utility determines value, whether for me or you. The principle applies across the spectrum to knowledge as well which is as good as ignorance if it does not transcend into wisdom.
Poet Kathir Bharathi has enunciated this in a seemingly simple but profound truth in this Tamil poem reproduced here with his prior permission alongside an English translation by moi:
Light
lives at a very great height.
That is even
slightly above sound.
But,
spraying itself
over and over,
it searches for
me
you
the dew on the tips of grass
the nerunji flower
and the tiny frog.
It is agreeable
even to come
and live inside
a torchlight.
Those who
are at a height
have no work
at heights.
